About Sweet Lupin

A crop with 6,000 years of history, a nutritional profile unlike anything else, and the power to heal both the people who eat it and the soil it grows in.

The Plant

Meet the Sweet Lupin Bean

Sweet Lupin (also spelled lupine or lupini) is a flowering legume in the same family as peas and lentils. It produces striking purple, yellow, and white flowers and grows in temperate climates across Australia, South America, and the Mediterranean. But it's what's inside the seed that makes lupin extraordinary.

With up to 40g of protein per 100g, more than 30g of dietary fibre, and a glycaemic index of just 15, lupin is arguably the most nutritionally complete plant food on earth. It is naturally gluten-free, low in carbohydrates, and rich in essential amino acids — making it a complete protein source without any animal products.

Ancient Roots, Modern Rediscovery

Lupin has been cultivated since at least 4,000 BCE. Ancient Egyptians grew it along the Nile; the Romans used it as a staple food and soil improver; Andean civilisations in Peru and Bolivia cultivated it at altitude for millennia. In the Mediterranean, lupin seeds were a common street food — sold salted from barrels, much like olives today. Despite this rich history, lupin largely disappeared from Western diets during the 20th century as cheap wheat and soy flooded global markets. Today, researchers, nutritionists, and food innovators are rediscovering what ancient civilisations already knew: lupin is exceptional.

The Crop That Gives Back

Lupin is a nitrogen-fixing legume — meaning its roots form a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available nutrients. This natural process enriches the soil, reducing or eliminating the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. Growing lupin in rotation with other crops improves soil structure, increases organic matter, and boosts yields of subsequent crops by 10–30%. It requires no irrigation in most climates, produces no methane, and has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any protein source. Lupin doesn't just feed people — it actively restores the land it grows on.

Behind Eat Lupin

Powered by Lupin Platform Inc.

Eat Lupin is a consumer education campaign created by Lupin Platform Inc. — a Canadian company building a vertically integrated lupin ecosystem across Canada and the USA. From securing plant breeders' rights and seed distribution licences, to teaching farmers sustainable growing practices, processing lupin into B2B ingredients, and offering food development consulting to CPG companies, Lupin Platform Inc. is working to make lupin a mainstream crop.

Eat Lupin is how we bring that mission to your kitchen. We believe the fastest way to grow the lupin economy is to create genuine consumer demand — and that starts with helping everyday people understand why lupin is extraordinary, and how easy it is to cook with.

The Eat Lupin team

Seed to shelf

Lupin Platform Inc. controls the full supply chain — from plant breeders' rights and farmer training to ingredient processing and food development consulting.

Farmer-first

We work directly with Canadian and American farmers, providing the knowledge, seed access, and market connections to make lupin a viable and profitable rotation crop.

B2B ingredients

We process lupin into high-quality flour, protein isolates, and whole-bean ingredients for food manufacturers and CPG brands looking to add clean-label protein.

Consumer education

Eat Lupin is our public-facing campaign — recipes, nutrition science, and honest storytelling to build a community of people who cook with lupin every day.
